Description

The objective of this Standard is to provide performance requirements and specifications
for the manufacture and application of hardboard.

The objective of this revision is to develop a joint Australian/New Zealand Standard on
the specification for hardboard.

This Standard is Part 4 of AS/NZS 1859, a series of Standards dealing with reconstituted
wood-based panels which are the following:

AS/NZS
1859 Reconstituted wood-based panels
1859.1 Part 1: Particleboard
1859.2 Part 2: Medium density fibreboard (MDF)
1859.3 Part 3: Decorative overlaid wood panels
1859.4 Part 4: Hardboard (this Standard)
1859.5 Part 5: Fibre insulating board (insulation board)

The format of this Standard has been arranged to provide uniformity of sections consistent
with AS/NZS 1859, Parts 1 and 2.

The methods of test, which were previously included in AS 2456 — 1982 and the AS 2457
series of Standards, are now incorporated into the AS/NZS 4266 series, Reconstituted
wood-based panels —Methods of test.

Hardboard, like natural timber and any other wood-based products, will change in
dimension and strength with variations in moisture content. Undue exposure may therefore
have deleterious effects on the properties of some grades of hardboard and precautionary
measures should be taken in the storage and use of the material as set out in Appendix D
in order to ensure its proper performance.

The term ‘informative’ has been used in this Standard to define the application of the
appendix to which it applies. An ‘informative’ appendix is only for information and
guidance.

First published in Australia as part of AS 0114-1968. Revised and redesignated in part as AS 2458-1982. Jointly revised and redesignated AS/NZS 1859.4:1997.

Scope

This Standard specifies requirements for the dimensions and properties of
three grades of hardboard.

NOTES :

1: Alternative methods for demonstrating compliance with this St andard are given in
Appendix A.
2: Appendix B gives further information on recommended procedures for testing and
acceptance.
3: Appendix C lists information that should be supplied by the purchaser at the time of inquiry
or order.
4: Appendix D describes recommended practices for the handling and storage of hardboard.
